My wife and I like to travel into Western North Carolina and do some gem and mineral mining. Here is a specimen of smokey quartz that we found in the Franklin area. Close examination shows purplish amethyst areas and showing up in the interior lighted picture as a black rectangle is a red/gold rutile crystal inclusion.
