Hmmm you do not mention where you or this material are from; which often can be helpful. A coin also helps to put the size in perspective for future posts. Looking at the enlarged photo I see what appears to be a cross section piece of a crystal with vertical striations running along the upper left side. That is consistent with what I often see on tourmaline and what the experts say to expect to see. The shape also works for what I have seen in tourmaline. Hardness should be in the 7 to 7 1/2 range on the MOH's scale. Let's see what others might add to that here. Have fun.

Could be, but need better pics. And like Mikey said, where it is from and hardness would be helpful information.

I was intending to dispute Mikeyrocks, with a suggestion that I see a layered iron ore/hematite look, until I backed off enough to see the overall look. From the general 3 sided shape, it indicates a tourmaline broken across the crystal, since tourmaline has a triangular cross section, with rounded corners.
