Hello, I was wondering if anyone had been to the Hiddenite mine North of Charlotte. I live in Raleigh, and the closest mine to me. I was wondering if it was a good mine, or if I should suck it up and drive to the Franklin area

The North American Emerald Mine outside of Hiddenite open to clubs is well worth your trip. I would not waste your time on the other Hiddenite mines. If you live in Raleigh you might want to consider joining the Tar Heel Gem and Mineral Club. Several of us live in Wake Forest and some get to the meetings. They have been going out about every month this year. Check out the Morefield Mine in Amelia Va for a fun day trip. Worth your effort. Dan

It is always good to get new folks into the hobby. Check out the Tar Heel club on the net. You can download their membership form and see some old newsletters. There are also clubs in Greensboro and down near Charlotte. Enjoy. Dan

A gem mining place called blue diamond gems opened up on friday in Apex, they bring all their dirt in from the mountains but i checked it out today and it was pretty fun. Found sound nice flourite but not to much else. Or check out garnet hill outside of wake forest, i have never been there but have heard you can find garnets all over the place. EDIT:
I am heading up to garnet hill today to check it out, i have never been before but if i find anything of interest i wil lbe sure to post back
EDIT: Went to garnet hill today and collected 32 ounces of garnets in about 3 hours, most of them are pea size pyropes but a few were nickle and quarter sized.

If you got to Mason's Ruby and Sapphire mine or the cherokee mine I am surprised you did not enjoy them. Outside of town, if you can hook up with someone who knows the area, are great digging places. There are several books available on Western NC gem or mineral localities. Hope things go better.

The folks at Masons and Cherokee were all very nice and all very helpful, so I guess I should correct myself and say I was let down with the small amounts we found and the quality as well. I have the books you are talking about and in the process of planning the next trip. My biggest find at Cherokee was maybe a carat and at Masons it was like 5 carats. The places in North Carolina that are free really look interesting and I want to give them a shot, I think it will feel better to find it myself (hopefully). Diamond Hill in S.C. also looks pretty neat!

I've got to say that a one carate and a five carate ruby and sapphire are nothing to be really disappointed with. You might also want to check out the Morefield mine. I know it is kind of for kids but I love to go and get my fill of amazonite and recently very nice garnets on the hill.

Amazonite is a really neat gem, I have actually been trying to call the Morefield Mine but get no answer. I hope they are still in business!

Go online. They are listed under TOTE shows. It will give there days and hours that they are open. They have an odd season and getting hold of them by phone is almost impossible. I want to head up this Fall sometime and get some more goodies.

There are a couple that I use but my favorite is Rick Jacqot's mineral collecting in Western North Carolina. You can find it on any bookstore website. Or you can just type in gem and mineral collecting in north carolina and get several or enlarge the search to the southeastern US.

Scoobie, I've going to Franklin the better part of 30 years. I know most of the mine owners and can tell you that it's worth the drive, if you go to the right mines, cherokee, mason's and even mason mountain. Bill
