I was just wondering if anyone has been to the Cunningham beryl and smoky quartz mine near Due West, SC lately? I know that Rodney was offering trips to the mine last time I heard anything; but has anyone been there recently? If so, how about posting some pictures of the material you found. Dennis, I know that this mine was in your stomping grounds so how about a status report and let us know if your have found anything there during recent trips.

Rick, thanks for the info on Cunningham Mine. As we know, if anyone desires to visit this site, they must do so on their own unless you can make reasonable arrangements for the club.

I went there in the spring. I was very disappointed because it was advertiesed (I paid 40 dollars) as a beryl AND amethyst dig. I drove 8 hrs and about 4 hrs into the beryl dig I was advised that there would be no amethyst dig. (which is why I went there to begin with) He said the pit was unstable....but they had the digging equipment there....so I dont quite understandwhy they didnt take care of it etc. Maybe I do not understand digging. Amos said he would "work a deal" with me on my next trip. I was just so bummed after driving 8 hrs each way. You think if Magma digs there he will gaurantee the quartz/amethyst pit? (I am not saying this to put anyone down. Just was a bummer for me)

sure he will , if you can gaurantee it wont rain the day or two before the scheduled trip ! Heavy equipment can not be run in a mudhole . Mud does not pile up as you are digging and trying to place it to the side , it flows like pancake batter , which at the time you mentioned , was the situation in the back pit.

Um, I wasnt being snotty, it was just alot of time and money for me and I was just disappointed. Nobody explained the why....just that it couldnt be dug. I did say that perhaps I just did not understand digging enough yet. Appologies if I offended anyone.

no problem . As I said , the problem was that the area hadnt drained and it was like soup . No much you can do , becuase you cant get the stuff out of the way , it just flows back in .

I agree with Rick; but I'd go even further and say that Amos Cunningham isn't worh more that $0.15 to dig. And then only if you live within walking distance and are really bored and know something I don't know.

I dunno. I 've seen some nice quartz specimens from there and I think there might eventually be some good beryl that comes out as well if it gets worked far enough down and back into the hill.

Now I did dig out some beautiful beryl. My nicest specimine...a very green color (just not quite crystalized to be emerald) You can see where waaay back in time it fractured and re-healed. I like it very much and am very proud (lol much to some peoples chagrin) of it.

I have seen recently many nice specimens come from there. I think the mine is still in its infancy and requires a lot of digging time and effort. Here are some recient finds. I posted the picture below in an earler post. Dennis

How do you go about getting acces to these mines? Is it public? and does anybody know of any other good ones open to the public. I'm from upstate NY so I want to go on a trip worth the time.
