Check out the video on this site: www.kyanite.com/Has MAGMA ever tried to get access to this quarry? The kyanite deposit is enormous. Jeff

I've taken the liberty of emailing the head of Human Resorces at Kyanite Mining Corporation, to see what arrangements exist for mineral collecting. I know that in the past few years some local virginia clubs have collected there.

I definately think you have to be in a club to have a chance at all to go there. I am from VA and learned about that locality long ago and tried and tried to contact them about collecting just one specimen from there. It does seem like there is another mountain not far from there that is also loaded with kyanite and is privatly owned mountain property if my memory serves me well...I'm still trying to find more kyanite in Ashe Co. NC. AJ

Jeff: I have been to the quarry you are asking about. It is located on the top of a mountain and produces a lot of good kaynite. Most of it is white; but there is some blue material around the site. The other neat rocks that are found are rocks with the same coating of multiple brilliant colors as found at Graves Mountain. I have always been to the site with the Lynchburg Club and not as an individual. There office does contain some nice displays of items made out of kyanite. Here are a few pictures of material from that site: Lee

I've been to that mine years ago. I remember it's west of Cumberland and is part of the old Southwest mountain range but can't remember the name of the mountain. There are several other localities in Virginia that produce kyanite as well.

Willis is in Buchingham, Baker is in Prince Edward, Willis Kynite is pretty crappy and Baker is dark blue. Baker is like Graves in alot of respects. The picture they used for the web site is definitly Baker mountain stuff.

I've sent two messages, to two different people in the Kyanite Mining Corporation, asking them for thier policy on mineral clubs. They have not responded.

Willis Mountain and the Baker mine were at one time both owned by the same man. The Dixon family still has a lot of connection to the mine. The kynite is used mostly for fire proofing and NASA had a contract with them for the Space shuttles and other suits the astronauts used. I went to school with many of the Dixons over in Charlotte County. The kynite there did have a blue color as I have a piece of it. Also my husband had a huge rock that was given to him by Gene Dixon himself. It is difficult to get in touch with the son-in-law although a group from Richmond is going there this month. Dillwyn has other minerals and metals though that you would want to check out.

I wanted to let you guys know that I am open for collecting and have gem grade blue kyanite very similiar to the old Baker mine material. I just discovered the deposit and purchased it 2 years ago. I was tired of the real places for digging all being closed, built on, or salted and I wanted to offer the real experience for us rockhounds I am located on over 100 acres of land and about 40 acres or so are gem grade kyanite. The color rivals sapphire and nearly every piece is at least cab grade. Earthen Paradise 599 Browntown Rd Prospect VA 23960 434-808-5966 call or text www.earthenparadiseinc.comAdmittedly my website needs work www.facebook.com/earthenparadiseincMy facebook page has a lot more pictures and information. I am excited to meet fellow rockhounds! I have been collecting as long as I can remember. I love it and am thrilled to be able to share it with others!!! I am open daily year round by appointment for digging, primitive camping, hiking and wild berry picking in season. The blueberries will be ready next! I am a very primitive setting and just getting things going. No bathrooms yet but plenty of bushes and TONS literally of kyanite. I am hoping to get enough business to get porta potties in the next few months. No limit on collecting and I am running a special for $20/person and half price for kids 12 and younger. That will stay until I get restrooms and my expenses go up. I am going to keep that price for members of any gem or mineral club as my way of helping support club membership nationwide. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope I get to have you out digging -Jessica
