Sometimes your home displays, i.e. yard rocks, can turn against you. A week ago today a 10 lb soapstone bowl I had along the sidewalk to our deck was used by some SOB to smash the glass out of our back door. So, now we have become a crime statistic in Cary as we became the 3rd victim of burglary on our street in the past 3 weeks by the same suspect. Fortunately, the perp(s) did not bother my three large display cases in the living room. If a yard rock wants back inside it will find a way. Here are a couple of photos. The second picture shows the soapstone bowl as we found it when we got home. Consequently, my wife and I moved all of our yard rocks into the garage for the time being. Peace, Dennis

Wow. That's terrible. At least everyone is OK, and they left your collection alone. Hope they catch the perp/s.

They must be on crack to smash that huge glass pane in that way. It would seem to show they are careless and deperate in chasing their next hit. Of course what burgler isn't desparate and idiotic. Sorry to see that Dennis. I hope they didn't take much if nothing from the displays. I hate that that happened.

Maybe the burglar should be stoned to death...

Thanks, everyone, for the responses. I have the same opinion that you all shared. I better not ever find them in my house or they will not leave conscious.
Scott: I was fortunate that none of my showcases were touched, so I did not lose any specimens. Your assessment of the perp(s) is the same as the Cary police.....probably drug heads looking for quick cash, credit cards, and small electronics they can fence to buy their drugs.
We were lucky, but included in the items stolen were emergency cash, credit cards, some of my wife's heirloom jewelry, a digital camera and printer dock, and important documents, such as our SS cards, birth certificates, and others.
We were gone less than 3 hours and when we returned and found the door smashed we were more more concerned about the safety of our cats than any objects that might have been taken.
It's just a matter of restoring our personal identity records, and trying to not be paranoid about leaving the house unattended.
Peace,
Dennis

Being a victim sucks!
It's happened to me twice...
As a teenager living with my parents; our house was broken into. Same thing- jewelry, coins and antiques all gone.
The second time some jackass took my beloved Toyota 4Runner (a heavily modified rock crawler).
I just can't understand disrespecting someone else so much to do something like that.
I agree with several of the others.... Thieves should be heavily punished. How about a couple of broken kneecaps? ;D

Interesting, SSN cards and Birth Cert.! How does an invader just happen across those particular types of documents? I hope you are aware that a large percentage of crime is usually perp'd by someone you know, knows you, knows someone you know...has been in/near your home at some point. Crime is not as random as many believe. The items taken you describe seem odd given the time you say you were away from the home. A real smash n grab with nearly 3hrs to work...and that is 'all' that is missing? Sounds suspect to me.
