Nice collection of pet wood, Tim.
I collected some pet wood between Zapata and Hebronville in 1976. Would you know the age and formation of pet wood in that area? I am working on my fossil database and like to try to include things like species (if known), geologic period, and geologic formation, etc. I have been able to find references on the pet wood I found outside of Big Bend National Park, but cannot find anything about the south and east Texas wood.
Keep up the great work finding the wood.
Peace,
Dennis

Dennis, check out the Catahoula formation, plenty of info about it.Tim is about 45 miles from me and this formation runs in a band through our area, in South Texas and across the gulf region.

I have a petrified wood fetish as well.
You've got some really nice pieces there.
So what are you going to do with it?
Personally, I enjoy slabbing the pieces I want and donating the rest of it to schools or people who either love petrified wood or just need landscape material.

Snuffy,
Thanks for the info. I downloaded a geologic map of Texas today and the Catahoula formation boundary occurs in the area near the Jim Hogg and Zapata county-line where I collected the pet wood in 1976. I may never figure out the species of the wood, but at least I now have the geologic information that I needed. Thanks for the heads-up!
Peace,
Dennis

Nice wood! I too am addicted to pet wood (and maybe a whole lot of other rocks). Was at the Mozarkite show in MO 2 falls ago, and an older gentleman had some opalized wood from Toledo Bend, and it had fire. Of course, he wanted an ear and an eye for a slab or cab.
