Anyone know of any good collecting in eastern north carolina? since PSC canceled the fall session for the fossils, I have to do something. I know there can't be many, if any, gem mines in ENC, but I was hoping maybe someone had some suggestions! I'm in Jacksonville, and traveling to WNC is a looong drive. let me know if anyone has any ideas, I'm already in the east coast fossil group, so I'm just widening my base. -Brianne

You can always collect fulgurite and seashells on the outer banks. Its like a day at the beach. And this time of year the pickins are ripe.

Garnets north of Raleigh too. I know some of the other phosphate ? mines in eastern NC allow collecting for fossils, but you'd have to check with them to find out when/where and make sure they're not blasting that day, fill out safety forms, etc. We've found sharks teeth just walking along beaches around Wilmington area too.

You can or use to go to the Martin M Fountain quarry in Fountain N.C. You can collect fossils and minerals. There is a old beach full of sharks teeth shells and much more. It is about half way down in the quarry. Also minerals in the lower part of the pit.

Hi, I live in Morehead City/Atlantic Beach area and unfortunately, there aren't many places nearby to collect. I have been to Raleigh and surrounding areas in central NC from time to time, but it's a drive and must be planned out. In addition to Magma, you might think about joining the Wake Co. Gem and Mineral Club where they send out newsletters on upcoming field trips around their area. When you live by the coast, it's definitely a trade-off. Not a rock in sight, but the view and fishing are nice. I also have a rock pile in my yard that I look over and trim specimens during off times. Swapping through this website is also a good way to meet people and get some interesting specimens. If you're ever up this way, email me at jlee13@ec.rr.com and I'll be happy to show off my collection and rock pile.

My house is in Castle Hayne, near Wilmington,NC. About 3 miles down the road from me is the Martin Marietta Quarry. It is free to go there on Thursday & Friday when they are not blasting. Call them before you go to make sure they are not blasting and it is easy & free to collect. There are numerous sharks teeth and other fossils there. I found a lot of sea biscuits as well as a few shells and oysters shells that have agatized and some with Drusy calcite. It is only about a mile from I-40, exit 414(Castle Hayne exit). When you exit go east about a mile or 2 and it is on the left. Bryan

Bryan,
I didn't know about this place. I would love to come down and collect sometime. Let me know the next time you're going and maybe we can hook up.

Jonsrocks,
I normally stay in Anderson, SC most of the winter, but might be going up that way soon. It is fun to collect there, but I really don't know what half of the things I find is. I need to do some research on fossils. I have been so busy digging quartz that it is all I study lately. Bryan

You guys are awesome! I haven't been back on in a while, work as been kicking me in the rear. I'm printing this page off and I'm going to check back frequently to see if anyone has posted anything new, I have one other person here at work who is also interested in fossils and rocks. It would be nice if when it gets warmer if we could all meet up and try to get some collecting going or something. But I will defiantly check out these places you all informed me of, they sound really good. I've had luck with random shark teeth on the shores, but nothing like I found at PCS, but I would definitely like to get my collection going. I'm sure you've all got me beat! Jonsrocks, my email is icicle_drops@hotmail.com if you want to get some people together for a warmer season collection time. You guys are great!

Icicles, I too live in jacksonville, just currently deployed at this time, but should be back home in late spring. Maybe we can try to connect if you would like to plan a trip to do some rock hunting. I would most likely have my wife and 2 kids with me as well. Shoot me a pm if you would like to, and I'll send you my e-mail address.

THanks for the welcome once again Becky. I am back in the Persian gulf region...this time out with the 26th Marine Expiditionary Unit, Air Combat Element. I am serving as the Casevac Team Leader this go around. That is just a bunchof fancy talk that basically says that I fly around and wait to drop into a combat zone to retrieve any casualties. Working from aboard the USS Iwo Jima. I am trying to have a good Christmas, and thank you for the well wishes.

Castle Hayne, NC I also live in Castle Hayne. I have never been to Martin Marietta yet. I only live a few miles away but I didn’t know to rock hound there I will have to try it out. I am definitely going to try out the Garnet digging in Raleigh. But those are the only two places I know about anywhere even close by. If anyone has any other suggestions I would appreciate any information you could provide. In July I am going on a road trip to Denver, Colorado but I don’t really know of any places along the way that would allow rockhounding. If anyone has any suggestions for this also I would really appreciate it.
