A few members of our club from Pendleton SC went to Graves Mt last Saturday.
Two of us were mainly interested in lazulite so we went directly to the lazulite pit just below the dam. It was full of water so we just played around the pit for a while and found some small pieces.
We then went around the end of the main body of water to another lazulite site. Dug there (found some nice pieces mostly in matrix) for a while when we started hearing noices and it started to get dark. We decided to get out of there and got back to the dam when the storm hit. I don't know who left a piece of plywood about 4' x 6', but thank you. We sat on a slope near the bottom of a hill holding the plywood over our heads. Water from the rain poured down the slope wetting our bottoms and water even ran into our boots.
The storm lasted a little over an hour with constant lightning and thunder. Much of the time the thunder and lightnng were less than 5 seconds apart, for a while they were simultaneous. Neither of us, both in our 70's, had ever been out in such a violent storm. The wind made sure we got thoroughly soaked. Water was pouring down the hills and the floor around the lazulite pit was under water. My bucket that was sitting nearby had over 2" of water in it when the rain stopped.
We later found out that 2 others were only about 50 yards away from us around the hill under some low pine trees. They too were soaked and uneasy as the storm didn't look like it was completely over. We left Graves and it's lazulite until next time.
