Didn't have time to go rockhounding yesterday, but decided to get my exercise by walking 2 miles. Went to some Clemson Univ. property that backed onto Lake Hartwell. After my walk I decided to go to the shoreline where I found my epidote Sun. Found a couple of small badly weathered pieces. Saw a small shiny spot on a rock and took it with me knowing it was fine mica, but I was going to show my "gold" specimen to my collecting buddy.
Got my magnifying glass when I got home - SURPRISE - in a less than 1/2" square were about 25 small "chunks" of GOLD. This area has over 10 old gold "mines", in fact, there are 2 within a mile of this location. Many pan in the streams around here and in Oconee County, but I think there's as much gold in this small rock as some of them find in a year and they really work hard.
I had raked the area so I could find more epidote after a good rain, but now I can't wait for that rain so I can go gold prospecting!
