If anyone is interested in fluorescent minerals there is a field trip opportunity to the mother lode. Beth & I went to Franklin, NJ 2 years ago and it was worth the long ride from Charlotte to collect fantastic specimens. There was also a yard sale at the Franklin Mineral Museum, where they sold (cheap) their overstock material. Anyone interested need to register, since they have to have at least 100 signed up to open the Trotter and Buckwheat dumps. Go to: www.uvworld.org/ and sign up. This is held in conjunction with the local gem & mineral show. These locations are only open to collectors 1 (one)day per year. I was also surprised that the country around Ogdensburg is quite close to our foothill here in NC.

;D Wish I couldm but I don't think the budget or time schedule will allow it. I am thinking about a trip to Canada a little later this year and understand there are great agates, jasper and fossils in New Brunswick. I have about 60 lbs of the material from Sterling Hill and a flat of Buckwheat material. I only have 2 pieces of Trotter, but they are BRIGHT!

That's interesting, Doug... Back in the last century when I was a teen , my folks would take me to Franklin to collect. Buckwheat and Trotter. But I always wanted to go to Sterling Hill, which was still operating at the time, and not open to general collecting. Seems as if the tables have turned. Well, it's good to know that you can still collect at those old dumps, albiet infrequently. So many good sites have closed under the pressure of development.

You should try to go back! The Sterling Hill Mine is open for collectign Sat. & Sun. The Trotter IS available at NIGHT! I would love to be able to walk in there with a high watt lamp and find the really bright stuff! When I was at Sterling Hill it was $1.00 a lb for all you could pick up. I do recommend if you want a lot of material that you carry hand trucks or something similar. It is a long hike carrying out 2 full buckets. My arms grew about 6 inches.
