I went to the Morefield gem mine in Amelia County and it was a blast. Lot of work too! Found some garnet in a rock. Person at front desk said it's not worth trying to extract from the rock. Any idea as to how much it may be worth?

What I do John to get a idea of what things are worth is goto Ebay and type in rough garnet. It wont reflect the exact price since most people on ebay are bargin shoppers but it will give you a idea.
below are the replies from the old forum. --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
On the main page there is a link to upload it to the photo album. Im in the process of upgrading the forum so soon we can upload them here. Thanks --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

I have never been there but heard its a great time and you can find some real nice stuff. Did you find any amazonite. That is the best place in the world to find amazonite. Rutherford mine used to be alot of fun too , but has now been closed to the public. what are the prices now for buckets. Im thinking of going down soon.

Ebay.... how terribly depressing I find it. I suppose it's great for those looking for a deal. I have looked at Spessartite on ebay and have found cut stones offered at a couple of hundred dollars that have a quoted retail price of many thousands !. Other cut stones for less than $20 that I would would spend 2 or 3 hours on cutting myself and couldnt sell them for that cheap. Sometimes I will see specimens such as the ones I collect with a higher price that others and they usually dont have any bids on them. Obviously people will go for the value auctions before dishing out bucks for a fine specimen that was obtained through nothing less than hard manual labor, sweat smashed fingers. Sometimes I just tell people that the particular specimen of mine they are interested in is "not for sale" because I know what that specimen is worth to me . The hard work I myself put in to finding them and of course the traits unique to each specimen are what I go by to judge the value of my own material. I also know that material from Ramona is quite rare and hopefully to my benifit, well sought after, so I end up keeping my stuff . Some of my specimens are almost priceless to me in that they are one of a kind and it would take a genuine collector who knows this to really want it for they're collection.

Oh boy and we go to Moorefield all the time. I have some garnets from that mine that we tumbled and polished. I found a garnet ball that is about one half inch in width but is the size of a baseball flattened that is. However I have put some of the garnets on jewelry. Ask varockman as well often sell on ebay. But I agree you have to watch some of the sellers and the buyers as well. We had a guy take a blow torch to 925 and sterling silver and then claimed it was not silver because it would not melt. Then he said it became a blob and looked like copper. Duh does not realize we have certification it was indeed silver. But some of the sellers will sell you bad stuff.
