Last night at Gem meeting a guy mentioned hunting for malachite and other copper carb minerals in Az. Mentioned a certain copper mine that lets you dig. Anyone here know anything about searching in AZ? Am doing a big trip to the four corners area of NM, AZ, Co, UT and wonder if there is anything on our way (not that the crew will let me stop but there's always hope, if I'm planning the trip, which I am). Suuuuuure would be fun to bring home some malachite or anything else in that group. Becky

Becky.....you might want to check out the information on this link before you go on your trip: www.desertusa.com/Thingstodo/du_ttd_treasure.htmlThey list a lot of great places (with driving directions) to look for fossils, meteorites, gems and geodes. Some might be near where you will be travelling. Good luck! -Steve

Becky,
when are you planning your trip? When I get a few extra moments to spare I can give you a lot of info on that part of the country, well atleast a few places around Northern ARizona, SW Utah, and the areas of Nevada and Cali. within an hour or so of Las Vegas.

Dave, We are going in July, leaving June 30, will be gone for 3 weeks. The quick gist of it is: Vicksburg Ms to Carlsbad, white sands, then zigzagging up toward AZ toward Holbrook/Petrified Forest, Monument Valley/ window rock, Canyon de Chelly. pick up 264 toward Tuba city then over to North Rim Grand Canyon (mule ride on my birthday). Zion is next, then Bryce, back down to Page (renting a boat on Lake Powell for a day! WHeeee! I hear the ramp is a quarter mile). Leave Page and head toward Cortez, Co for Mesa Verde. Head South toward Gallup, 40 ax Okl, hit Ark and hopefully Mt. Ida/Hotsprings. What I'm finding for Arizona seems more southwest than we will be. Like Deming area. don't know if there are copper areas more north or not. Any info you have will be greatly appreciated. Oh, good luck on the new job and Raleigh. I'm sure Lee will take you right in. Becky,
DH led a 2 week trip last summer to that area, mostly southern Utah. I am at work now and the itinerary and maps are home. We didn't collect any of the copper materials but did do fossils, obsidian, agate, topaz, septarian nodules, petrified wood, sunstones.
If you are interested, I will email the info to you. I can't help with the copper stuff, sorry.

Thanks Basket. anything out that way is good. will be in the Escalente area for a bit and the Lake Powell area. We are filled up with things to do but if there is something relatively easy I will try to sneak it in. b

There is excellent hunting in Southern AZ, particularly the Patagonia area. One can find vanadinite, amethyst/quartz crystals and geodes, azurite/malachite/chrysocolla, pyrite cubes, agates, various lead ores, and many other minerals. One particularly good area to start if you are going to be in the southern part of the state is Duquesne/Washington Camp, a historic mining district for lead and copper. Just driving through the area you will spot numerous dump piles and prospects, all of which offer excellent collecting opportunities. Also look around Bisbee, AZ as there are numerous abandoned prospects and mines with beautiful azurite, malachite, and chrysocolla specimens.

Have to correct my earlier post. Will be in Deming NEW MEXICO, not Arizona. Have contacted the Gem and Min group there and looks like we may have a trip planned for the morning we are there. Would be nice to find some geodes, agates, chalcedony and whatever. another rock site I'm visiting for questions and answers on this area says "this is rattlesnake country! be careful where you put your hand!" Hmmmmm. Definitely noted. Becky, off to the knee doctor today...

Becky:
It sounds as though you are going to have a great rock hounding trip. Your early investigations of locations to visit will surely pay off. Hope you have a great trip - take a lot of pictures so you can share your trip with the group.

If you're going to be at Zion, I suggest looking for Petrified wood near Hurricane, Utah. I'm not sure of the directions, I'm sure they're online somewhere, if not they're in the New Mexico Rock Collecting Guide.
It's pretty easy pickings, and some big pieces can be found. You walk the washes looking for the Pet. Wood. My dad's entire back yard is now littered with it, hundreds of pieces, some as big as 2-3 ft. long.
The material is not very colorful, but some nice pieces will contain druzy quartz/smoky quartz and will begin to rival some of the "Brilliant Wood" found in Alabama.
Most of the other sites I know of are more in the Las Vegas region (i.e. out of the area you will be)

Gee, we'll just stop by your dad's house... Looked it up and doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility. Thanks. Any particular wash? Can you just get out anywhere and start looking? b
