We are traveling from Maine to visit my family in Pennsylvania in August. Instead of doing the amusement park thing this year we were hoping to do some rockhounding. Hope to find someone willing to guide us. Our youngest is 11 and we are the outdoor types. I would prefer finding rocks in the field rather than a bucket. Willing to take our chances of not finding gems or rocks of value in exchange of having the experience. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

In such cases I prefer to rent a car. I don't know. Just you can feel free in logistics. I know good guys from iversta.com/ I rented last time. Maybe it could be useful for you.

Smrk, What part of PA will you be visiting? I live in Western PA and the pickings here are slim unless you want to find wurtzite (tiny) or fossils. We have some pretty great fern and reed fossils, actually. Eastern PA, on the other hand, seems to have plenty of spots and an abundence of trilobite fossils, apparently. Check out this site - you may find it helpful. jerseydiamonds.webs.com/rockhoundingnynjpa.htm
