I am going to New Mexico/Eastern AZ in May...I will be spending a few days near Gallup - visiting Chaco Canyon, Petrified Forest and Canyon De Chelly and a few Days near Santa Fe - visiting Bandelier and Taos. Looking primarily for small tumbling and cutting material...petrified wood, agate, jasper, etc... Anyone know of some good rockhounding sites in these areas?

Check out the "Rockhounding In . . . . . ." series. There are lots of sites in those that are still viable. You can find them at Amazon.com.

I am going to Arizona in September to do 10 days of desert rockhounding (I live in Pennsylvania). I bought two books : "Gem Trails of Arizona", EXCELLENT book with explicit details of sites and map directions, most sites on public land...and "Rockhounding Arizona" also a good book with directions to sites. Good luck!
