I really need some help. Incase you don't know what knapping is, it is making tools and blades from a stone that flakes. (aka flint chert jasper obsidian) Anyway I really need to find some. I am by the Phoenix area. There are many washes (dried rivers) that don't seem to turn up anything. Where should I look? What is knappable here? What does it look like & how can I identify it? I really need some help from you guys. I need the stone for a trade I got into, to send to someone. Other research isn't helping too much, so I thought I would ask you guys. Please help me out here

I am not a gemologist nor a geologist- but I live in Ohio where we have more knappers than some states because of the notable flint that comes from the Flint Ridge area, so I know what you are talking about. The knappers I have spoken with in the past prefer a form of quartz (ie: flint, chert, jasper) that has more of a crystaline look to it so it shines up well. When you look at the rocks, you will see what I mean when you have a stone with more of a "sheen" compared to a duller piece. They also like a grey type of flint from Flint Ridge that they "heat treat" and it turns a beautiful teal color. I quess the best place to look would be a place that could have quartz, particularly of a "massive" nature. We often take flint to North Carolina to several rock shops because it seems flint from the Flint Ridge area is in high demand. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Agate also works. I have seen some of that around your area. Find a rock shop around your area and they can tell you where to find any of that stuff....Good Luck
