It's funny how much the piece amethystguy posted looks like psilomelane, an oxidized manganese.
trish, there is some cool stuff to be found in Texas, I am originally from central Texas myself and have some awesome stuff I found there.

Really? What town? Im at lake limestone, other side of Groesbeck. What did you find? Im curious to know...i've always loved rocks/minerals, and alot of times we go out in the country, my favorite thing to do it roll up my britches and walk through the creek beds looking for cool rocks, and i always wished i had a better idea of what to look for. Educate me...please

Lake Limestone, yeah! I am from Riesel, lol, it is near Marlin. The creeks are the best place to look, I found some huge ammonite fossils in a creek near my house, they look like they were limestone too. I was building a stone wall near Lake Belton once out of limestone and we found some crazy crystals in the quarry rock, maybe algae and coral fossilized with calcite crystals, still need to id but it is back home. I used to find lots of pet. wood and jasper in creek beds too, look for quartz type stuff... Try to find a rockhounding TX book for specific sites because they are there. The geology varies so much and I don't know any specific sites. When I was a kid I got to go to the woooly mammoth site, check that out if it is open now, I dug at the area when it was first discovered, unbelievable site. Crawford and Valley Mills have lots of fosssils and caves but I don't know where they are, just heard about them. Lots of good stuff in Texas, topaz too...

its ok ab...
My hubby works at that steel mill, he's been there 25 years, and he didnt even know what it was...
Are there different kinds of manganese? The reason i'm asking is i looked up manganese and there seemed to be different specimens of it? I could be wrong.
4cr? Im gonna have to do research on all the things you listed, cuz i have no idea what they are...lol... didnt know topaz could be found, if you were to look for it, where would you look? In rocks? Underground? Where? I did buy the book, Road Side Geology of Texas. I have access to a Sand Pit, but it has red dirt in parts of it, is there anything i could look for in red sand? And of course lots of Limestone. Its so abundant here, our county was named after it.

Just keep looking and pay attention to your local geology. Check your local limestone for fossils (shells and other small stuff), I used to find loads of them as a kid in the limestone fill at our power substation, lol. The topaz will be in a specific location and you will probably have to screen dirt to find it, I know the location is listed in some rockhounding TX books but I personally have only heard about it. The book you speak of is good but I find it a little too advanced until you really know your formations and geology, get soething with actual maps to locations. I used to look all over the place here and never find anything until I bought Rockhounding, CO and then I started to "get it", now I know what to look for. I want to go back to TX so bad now that I really know what to look for, I will find a lot of stuff then.

would you like precise directions to the topaz location ? Places to dig for petrified wood ? Agate ? Gem Trails of Texas by Brad L Cross ( revised and expanded 2001 ) is the book for you . I just recently got this book for about $15 , postage and all . I think I got it either on ebay or amazon. I highly recommend it as it has precise directions . I have already been to a few of the places and the directions are extremely accurate .

not that you asked me , mind you , but pyrite ( gold specks ) is often associated with galena . They are both sulfides , the galena being lead sulfide and the pyrite , Iron sulfide .

Hey ab here is the problem with it just being manganese. Manganese is a 5 on the scale which would make it pretty soft where as chrome being a 9 would increase the hardness of trish's rock so mixing the 2 would give you a....plus it's never found as a free metal in nature. If it was alloyed with aluminum, copper, or antimony then it would be magnetic. of all the ferromaganese components chrome fits the bill. thats why i figured it couldn't just be manganese but I must say if it wasn't for you and that guess then where would we be...I would still be stuck on meteorite....good job, ab

trish, i am not a very smart person, you just happened to find something like i have, and if you come here ill give you a truck full,i am on a scale of 1 to 10 i am in the zero part before 1,,now on this web site we have some very advanced people, like am guy now he is right, here in puebla, where they mine magnese, the some of the streets are filled with a glassy green rock, its from the foundry, the green rocks are from chrome which is also in your rock, this mine here was also a copper mine first,so some copper in your rock also, and no telling what else, might even be a grain of gold, because they later sent it to saint louis ,mo.to a foundry also because it had some gold and silver,,not much, but had a grain or two, also there they could seperate it,,,,if you can melt it you can make a nice chrome bumper,,,,better yet get someone to slab it and make nice cabachons,,,,,,ab

After finding some of this material myself and looking everywhere to identify it I finally found out that it is Ferrochromanganese. Now what I really want to know is can this be used to make jewelry with, and what is the approximate value per gram or lb. Thank you.

I just found something yesterday in my yard 2 individual pieces very heavy looking almost exactly like what you have here. When I took one piece and beat on the other one I was able to break a small chunk off which exposed the silver color interior. I did notice that there was a good description of the silver color being like a sugar granule kind of a texture. The outside almost black, I washed it with a scrub brush and dawn soap, kind of a blackish color seemed to come off of it, as my soil is clay. I live in Wood County WV, and that side of my yard has water run through it from a neighborhood behind me who said this was a natural gully. Because, I have water washing my soul away, and lots of sandstone, found this very unusual. I found a rather greenish blue rock and then also a dark green rock I hit and it fractured like glass, kinda layered. This heavy rock is solid silver color inside.
