wanting to know if anyone has any knowledge of the opal that can supposedly be found in Georgia (e.g. quality) - Stone Bluff below Augusta was supposed to be a source, not sure if still is or it is all private property now. Hyalite is a variety that has been found in the northern regions of the state, but never laid hands on any and the pics on the net don't show much color/flash.

There have been reports of common opal around Shell Bluff....Same area as the Savannah River chert/agate.. Some of the the local "experts" believe this material has "opalized" I have a few pieces, but not really sure...I believe the Jury is still out on this....

The Georgia Mineral Society calls it 'opalite'. Here's another link you've probably already seen from GMS. www.gamineral.org/girard.htmGood Luck, Joe

Hey Joe, I'm familiar with opalite. It has less calories and is less filling, so you can carry more of it in your back pack! Dennis
