I know this thread is a bit old but I have some questions. I ordered two of the avon lamps, one to keep lw and the other a sw lamp. I love these little things, so awesomely cheap and made my ulexite glow a deep yellow. I made the mistake of taking them into my bathroom... oh my, the horrors. I plan on doing the timer mod once I find my soldering iron, just moved so things aren't where they should be. Going to also put them on battery power to make them a bit more portable. But I have a question about the bandpass sw filter. The uvsystems website sells the size I'd need for $172... ouch. I'm a teacher sans classroom and that's a bit much for my budget. Has anybody come across an affordable source for these filters? Also, I had the thought of using construction lamps for a uv source. For example, using this lamp: www.homedepot.com/Lighting-Fans-Work-Lights/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xg8Zaqn9/R-202194147/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053and exchanging the lamps with these? www.lightspectrumstore.com/servlet/the-759/Light-Bulb-Bulbs-Lamp/DetailI'd need to mod the clear plastic so the uv wouldn't be blocked and I have a large field battery I use for astronomy. Think this would work for a cheap 26W hand-held sw lamp?

The bulb in you link puts out SW ok. The plastic on the hand held lantern would block the SW light so a hole would have to be cut on one side as well as the back side would have to be blocked some how so you would not be looking into it as it would damage your eyes. You would also still need a black SW filter on the light side to block out the white part of the light that the bulb puts out. The filter doesn't have to be as long as your light fixture or bulb as long as it is in the middle of the bulb where most of the light comes from. I have made many of the Avon lights into a SW using a shorter cheeper filter, the FS-01 or FS-02. www.uvsystems.com/store/home.php?cat=5You can put the filter in the center of the avon light and fill in the ends with dark pastic or something. Use black silicon glue to glue the parts together.

Hello all, I'm taking my family to Marion Kentucky to dig for "Fluorite, Galena, Sphalerite, Quartz, Calcite, and more" I wanted to take a UV lamp. I read most of this thread and several other sites. I have found a lamp that I'm interested in. www.blacklightshop.com/shop/viewitem.php?groupid=0&productid=18It is kinda pricey but I the bulbs themselves are 3 for $55. www.defensedevices.com/uv-light-12-volt.html50 Watts peak output at 365nm The bulbs look like the will fit in one of those 1-Million Candlepower Spotlight Lanterns that I can get at Harbor Freight for $16. Any thoughts?
