Greetings! I live in the eastern Pennsylvania coal region and am an avid, long time rock collector. My question is, does ANYONE know if there are any interesting specimens to be found deep in the coal strip mines? I recently drove past a newly dug, very deep strip mine in the Mahanoy City area which is quite visible from the public road. Has anyone explored these strip mines and found anything? I would love to go exploring some of these mines, some are active, some long abandoned. Not sure if there is anything to be found in these except coal and black shale. I have heard you can find some very nice quartz crystals in the McAdoo area strip mines but cannot pinpoint an area to search. Any responses would be appreciated. I'm always up for meeting new people to explore the area

Hi, ya I actually been living in Schuylkill county, pa for quite a few yrs now and have been in probably hundreds of these strip mines searching for cool specimens, There actually is some really great collecting spots around here and have found a ton of different fossils over the years as well as some killer peacock coal and pyrite. The pyrite around here is totally awesome if ya know where to look. If ya like feel free to email me at psalms89.34@gmail.com
God Bless Kelly

If anyone gets a reply from user name "paleogeology", aka. Kelly on this site beware! She'll waste your time by not replying to several emails and in return will bombard you with religious BS.
