Greetings! I live in the eastern Pennsylvania coal region and am an avid, long time rock collector. My question is, does ANYONE know if there are any interesting specimens to be found deep in the coal strip mines? I recently drove past a newly dug, very deep strip mine in the Mahanoy City area which is quite visible from the public road. Has anyone explored these strip mines and found anything? I would love to go exploring some of these mines, some are active, some long abandoned. Not sure if there is anything to be found in these except coal and black shale. I have heard you can find some very nice quartz crystals in the McAdoo area strip mines but cannot pinpoint an area to search. Any responses would be appreciated. I'm always up for meeting new people to explore the area!
