newbie from Dallas, n.c. I am about two hours away from gazillions of gem mines. I started out with my 14 year old grandson and now I go picking even when he is not with me. Yard is filling up with specimens and wife is very understanding. Even goes with me. I have trouble understanding how gems like rubies can be in a category like Beryl. I sure need help.

Hello! Well Rubies are actually a type of corundum. Beryl is also a hexagon shaped crystal, but beryl is an ore of beryllium. Corundum is made up of aluminium oxide and has a Mohs hardness of 9 while beryl is the main ore of beryllium and has a mohs hardness of 7.5-8. Types of corundum include rubies (red), emery (black), and sapphire (green/blue). Types of beryl include emerald (only deep green), aquamarine (blue/green), golden beryl/heliodor (yellow), goshenite (colorless), morganite (pink), and red beryl.
