I have a 9 year old who is fascinated with gems, minerals and mining but I have no background in this area. Does anyone know of any easily accessible areas around Hartford or elsewhere in CT or Western Mass where we could go "mining" for quartz, mica or other rocks or minerals?
Any help is appreciated.

Yale Peabody Museum, Dinosaur Park in Hartford - He may like those. Gold Panning - Dinosaur Place at Nature's Art in Montville Simulated Mine for Kids - Mother Earth Gallery and Mining Company in Brookfield Sift for Fossils, Minerals, and Gemstones at Nature's Bend Mining in Oneco.
Franklin Mine. Sterling Hill Mine in New Jersey and Ruggles Mine in New Hampshire may not be too far away.
Try finding a local Rock Clubs as they will have field trips.
Good luck.
