I have no idea what these are... « Result #3 Today at 7:59pm »
Pardon the long post, newbie here, but have not been able to accurately identify my new finds. These were dug up in my yard during a gardening project, here in Mooresville, NC, 18 miles north of Charlotte, 33 miles north of the SC border on I-77. I'm still a virgin at this stuff so identifying is kind of a PITA right now.
#1 - This first stone seems very crystalline in makeup but I can't be sure.
#2 - At first I thought this stone had a peachy or maybe salmon pinkish tint to it, but I believe that was due to the red clay that it came out of.
#3 - Now this stone does definitely have a salmon pink tint to it, but there is a black knob off one end that has goldish flakes in it, and what looks to be a quartz vein above that. Quite interesting.
#4 - This stone appears somewhat off-white with some small pinkish veins in it. They are hard to see in the photos.
#5 - It's obvious, to me, that it's quite possibly a geode, and it was dug up by my wife and tossed aside so I don't know what part of the yard to go digging in to find the rest of it.
Other than identifying the stone type, I'd like to know if any of these can be tumbled or cabbed. Thanks for your help in advance!
Re: Homemade Cabber? « Result #4 Today at 7:49pm »
My 6 hp bench grinder has a wet kit you can order for it, along with splash guards, so it obviously can be done. Oh, and thanks for the idea!!! I do use one of those cloth polishers and compound on the right side of my grinder now for polishing metal and stuff. It's a dry polish, not like polishing a cab, but works great on all kinds of stuff, would definitely work as a "after you're done polishing polisher"...lol
Scott: Was there any explanation with each of the pictures? They look like large quantities of crystals; but from where and what are they?
Happy New Year.
Lee
Lee, these are hollywood produced crystals -- all fictional. In the movie "The Blob" they froze it in order to kill it, and when they did it turned into those crystals. Fake crystals! Lets call them blobite crystals.

The fee of $15 is that per day or for the entire trip? Just curious as I may be able to come down for one day only. As to parking, is the parking area fairly flat? My car is very low to the ground.

Re: Diamond Hill November Dig « Result #8 Today at 3:35pm »
Based on our last club dig, has the amethyst material played out or do we simply need to start digging at a new location? I, for one, was disappointed in not finding the beautify crystals which had been found during our past three digs. I hope we can get back into the big amethyst or smoky crystals during the next MAGMA dig.
Hello from Lake Norman, Mooresville, NC « Result #10 Today at 3:23pm »
Hey all, was invited over here by Ken the knife smith, as a good place to find out what's happening in North Cackalackee. Looks like a good forum and that y'all have a lot going on. I'm new to this hobby, and looking to meeting some of you and going hounding. Sounds like fun.
Anyway, thought I'd say hi!
My sig kind of shows a bit about me. Have had the nickname Chromenut for about 30 years now, had to do with one chrome nut on my 1966 AMC Marlin way back when. Now I'm deeply into my PT Cruiser ('06 convertible GT) and pumping out as much horsepower as possible out of it, plus runs on the track. Also into radio control planes (F4U Corsair being my favorite). Totally into computers, complete geek. Deeply into photography, the stones in my sig are part of my rough lot. Love wandering Lake Norman on my boat and fishing for bass. Lastly, getting involved in what looks to be an excellent hobby here with you all.
Anyway, have probably met a few of you over on Rock Tumbling Hobby's site. Looking forward to contributing where I can, learning what I can, and having fun.

Re: Graves Mountain in January « Result #14 Today at 10:20am »
Thanks to all for the tips and info via the posts and PM. I'm now trying to decide if I need to get up around 5 to start the trip and be there by 9.
Where and when do I pay the entry fee and sign the waiver, etc...?
I did look at the MAGMA dig reports and saw there is a lot of stuff to find. I guess, I will try and hunt for a little of everything I can and just try and find a few of each but who knows, I may get into the iridescent and go nuts. That stuff has amazing rainbow patterns in it and I must have a big fat chunk of lazulite.
Thanks again, now I just have to make sure about if that's NOT the weekend I have company. Fingers crossed.
Are yours fractures just reflecting light back or...
Yes the fractures are reflecting light back -- from both sides of the crack causing the interference pattern producing the rainbow effect. Those cracks are deep inside the crystal, not on the surface.

I think 1988 color movie. I have friends into toys and horror flicks. They want to go digging. I want to see more flicks where the monster morphs into crystals! The Blob Cluster takes up the whole street! Couldn't find images to post, so maybe one of us has the time to frame the dvd and post that pic. A bit much, but appreciated. Yay, most unusual post!

I don't know anything about this fellow. But he has my attention. All the stuff on this page is super interesting. But at the bottom of the front page is a whole section on the mechanics of knapping. Sure explains a lot, what a wealth of information. Later Jim

Uneekarts. Here's a link to MAGMA Fieldtrip Reports - scroll down to the Graves Mountain section. Here you should be able to see what type of material can be found as well as other useful photos. Rick B

Rick, that is fantastic, the find of a lifetime. Congrats and keep on hunting! If more people would get out a explore new sites and get a little more adventurous, maybe more finds like this would be discovered. Thank you for all you and Jerry and the others do for science and this hobby.

I love facbook! Great site Rick I'll be able to send you some people for sure I'm able to chat with most of my friends from back in high school & college that I figured to never see again in most cases. All the great friendships are reunited unless your talking about an ex girlfriend or something like that. Thats were you just need to have self control. My girlfriend and I trust each other 100% so its not a big deal to have an ex as a friend on FB. Its great when you can reminisce with an old buddy or pal
Its actually pretty easy, at first there are some steps that you have to take like going back & forth from your e-mail & facebook to verify codes and things like that. But it is mainly a fill in the blank thing. I GUARANTEE you will find people on there that you wouldn't think you would find.

Re: e-bay caution for sellers « Result #34 Yesterday at 2:56pm »
I actually just took the e-bay ID off because after thinking about it, I dont believe in calling people out in public. Revenge is not what I'm after here, only to help others be aware. So if you sell on e-bay and would like to know the ID so you can block the buyer also, just pm me.

Hi Rob, hows it been? Well, after being on the phone with e-bay & paypal for about an hour, I got the money back They said by checking the e-mails we shared, they could tell she was being fraudulent also basing it off my selling history. Not tooting my horn, but I have near perfect on my ratings. But, she can still leave me neg. feedback in which I'm kinda expecting.

Re: e-bay caution for sellers « Result #36 Yesterday at 2:33pm »
Hi Bryan, Ask her to return the damaged items and cc the request to Ebay. Chances are she won't and if she doesn't you will have some evidence to defend against the Paypal refund eBay will give her for simply declaring a loss. When eBay made their guaranteed delivery policy effective in October, the first week I had three claims of non-delivery by buyers; in the previous 5 YEARS I had not had three items claimed lost in shipping. EBay honored the fraudulent claims without consulting me and docked my Paypal account $100. Rob Whaley

e-bay caution for sellers « Result #37 Yesterday at 2:14pm »
Just to bring it to the attention to other e-bay sellers there is a fraudulent schemer on e-bay. I sent the items to a P.O. box using conformation & tracking and the person is saying she didn't get the items. Then, she changes her mind, and says she got them, but all 31 items are damaged! The ID is (if you sell on e-bay, pm me to get) if any of you feel the need to block this buyer to keep unnecessary things from happening. On top of that she got the items on first bid at 95 cent, probably got well over $500 of rocks for under $100 total! Just informing you guys so you can take your own measures, she will NEVER be able to buy from me again

I just can't get the hang of the facebook and myspace and all that crowd. This forum is much more my speed. I do appreciate your effort though and for those that do facebook it should be great exposure for the club.
Now Youtube, even I can figure that one out. Click and view, can't get much simpler than that.

Re: Graves Mountain in January « Result #39 Yesterday at 11:01am »
uneekarts, Get up a little earlier on Fri. and go down there. You can drive to the top of the hill. It is 7 miles from Cullyers Inn, west. If you want rutile, there are 2 ways to get it. Sift at the base of the wall with a 1/4" screen or dig in the wall with hammer and chisel. If you want lazulite chunks to cab, you need a 10# sledge hammer. If you wnat irredescent hematite you need a hammer and chisel and a pry bar. For all you will need a kittty litter bucket to put them in. For the lazulite chunks you will need a 5 gal. bucket. NO water on site and no electric. When you get to the top of the hill, you will have to walk approx. a mile carrying what you take. About 1/2 mile to the goat trail down into the main pit. About 1 mile to the second pit with the hematite and about a mile up and down to the left to the lazulite area. There are roads,BUT NO POV's allowed. Have to park at the designated area and then walk. There is a Hardee's in front of the Inn but, I suggest the Chicken House.(downtown on the way) Cooked while you wait. Hardee's for breakfast. Carry a sack lunch or snacks plus drinking water. This will be a great dig because ALL the MAGMA members will help you find whatever you care to go for. You definately need to go. I would be there if it wasn't 13 hour drive through the snow and ice here. Ken P.S. My avatar is me at Graves with the trunk loaded with 6 buckets of lazulite.

Re: Graves Mountain in January « Result #41 Yesterday at 10:13am »
I'm considering making this trip. Need INPUT - know NOTHING. PM me if you think it is too boring for the usual crowd but can I get some answers to these questions.
Lodging. I see Cullers Inn is listed on MAGMA and the rates show $48 so that sounds like the way to go for me. I don't want to take the chances of freezing to death on my first dig. Anything I should know about the place that isn't obvious from the web site? How far is the Inn from the dig site?
Travel looks to be a hair over 4 hours for me. Would it make sense to drive down Friday morning - dig noon to the end of the day - go to the Inn, sleep, get up, go back and dig to mid afternoon Saturday then pack up and drive home?
On Site questions - How close can I drive to the dig? I'll carry less if I have to haul it too far. I drive an AWD SUV so I can handle some terrain and mud issues but I planned to leave the 4WD at home as it is a very non-luxury vehicle.
Tools - I have basically nothing but a couple decent sized crowbars and a garden pitch fork. I can get a hammer and chisel for the trip but maybe I should look more for a sledge hammer than a rock hammer - suggestions? I do have some 5 gal buckets and other small kitty litter pail sized tubs. Is there any tool I really shouldn't show up without? Hey bud, how much to rent that shovel for 30 minutes?
Clothes - accepting the obvious, that it may be cold and wet, any other recommendations? I have a large blue tarp I could bring and some rope and stakes to possibly use for a shelter for the dig site, if that may be a good idea? Don't forget gloves.
Food - A cooler with some balogna sandwiches and a few bottles of water works for me. Any suggestions? Contributions for a pot-luck supper if one is likely? Hey, I got fruit cake !! Any kind of camp site cooking stuff - for on the site fire - Maybe some plastic eating utensils, paper products (plates - towels)
Potty time - I see a Porta is on site - need TP, Tucks?
Do I need water and a bucket for cleaning the finds? Is rock washing water on site?
I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what else I may need? Lots of dry clothes maybe, extra shoes, rubber boots, a couple hidden rocks in my pocket just so I can pull them out and claim I actually found something Sorry, I'm still racking.
Not really sure if I can make this one due to the distance and possible company coming but the response will help me with planning for future digs (ie...Bessemer)
Please, let me know if you have any suggestions and thanks in advance. Also thnaks to MAGMA for setting this up, even if I don't make this one, it's great to have the opportunity.

I signed up too, Rick. Only thing is I hardly ever use FaceBook. I don't much like it but I have an account because of keeping up with the times like you said. Maybe this will give me a reason to sign on more. I love the YouTube TV video show idea. Mark, Sr.
